CONTENT
Q: How many characters does the book teach?
A: A total of 166 kanji characters, plus 46 hiragana and 46 katakana are
completed covered as far as their pronunciation, use, meaning, and how
to write them. Here is a link to all of the characters taught.
Q: I understand there is an online companion course for this book that
has streaming video showing how to write each kanji character in the book.
How do I gain access to it?
A: Here is a link to the entry page. You will need to have the book on-hand when you enter.
Q: It seems that the first part of the book has detailed information about
the Japanese language. Does it teach the reader how to speak Japanese?
A: Yes and no. It has the basic information needed to enable the reader
to pronounce Japanese sounds; how to read hiragana; katakana; and the 166
kanji characters in the book. Also, each of the 166 kanji characters in
the books has about six to eight sample words showing how each character
is used in various compound kanji words. The book does not teach any grammar,
sentence construction, or common phrases.
The author and editor decided to include the detailed information about
the sounds of Japanese for two main reasons. 1) Many calligraphy students
want to be able to prounce the kanji they learn even though they are not
speakers of the Japanese language. 2) Some students ask why many characters
are often pronounced differently when grouped with other characters. For
these reasons we explain the different reading methods and other sound
changes that can occur.
Q: Exactly what information is provided about each character in the book?
A: For each character, the book shows how the character is written; the
number of brush strokes used; its meaning(s) in English; a graphic showing
the structure of the character according to the traditional radical classification
system; text explaing which character element the character is based on
according to the radical classificiation system, and whether this character
occurs on other more complex characters; its primary onyomi sounds, example
words or phrases using the onyomi pronunciation; the primary kunyomi pronunciations;
example words or phrases using the kunyomi pronunciation; a graphic showing
the order in which the character's brush strokes are written; a graphic
showing the division of character elements according to the SKIP system, along with the SKIP number and pattern; and additional notes for some
characters.
