連想式英英辞典活用法

【Ｑ】高校生です。学校の先生は「英々辞典を引け」と言いますが、どんな使い方をすればいいのかわかりません。何から手をつければいいでしょうか？

【Ａ】「連想式−−英英辞典活用法」を紹介しておきます。まず使うべき辞書を選びますが、ここでは Macmillan の“Dictionary for Children”を借りて説明します。たとえば、最初に potato を引いたとします。

[potato] The thick, rounded, underground stem of a leafy plant. Potatoes are eaten as a vegetable.

　potato はイラストが出ているので、「なるほど、こういうふうに表現するのか」と納得させられます。ついで、同類の根野菜 carrot はどう説明されているでしょうか。

[carrot] The long, orange-colored root of a plant. Carrots are eaten as a vegetable. Another word that sounds like this is carat.

　potato では“Potatoes are eaten as a vegetable.”とあった potatoes が carrots に変わっただけです。また、carrot の発音が carat と同じと書かれているので、今度は carat を見ると、“Another word that sounds like this is carrot.”という１節があります。これまで carrot を「キャロット」のように発音していた人は、外来語と英語の音はかなり違って、じつは carat と同音で、「カラット」に似ていることを発見できます。次は tomato です。

[tomato] A round, juicy fruit that is usually red. It is eaten as a vegetable, either raw or cooked. Tomatoes grow on vines.

　“Potatoes/Carrot are 〜”の部分が今度は“It is 〜”になっていますが、“〜as a vegetable”の部分は同じです。そのあと“〜 either raw or cooked”（生でも料理しても）という続きがあります。次は cucumber に移りたくなります。

[cucumber] A long, green vegetable with white flesh and many seeds inside. The cucumber grows on a vine. Cucumbers are eaten raw in salads or made into pickles.

　“are eaten”のあとが“raw in salads”（サラダなら生で）もしくは“made into pickles”（漬物にして）となっています。サラダとくれば、次は onion です。

[onion] The round or oval bulb of a plant. Onions have a strong, sharp taste and smell. They are eaten as a vegetable either raw or cooked.

　それぞれの野菜の形状を前半部で説明するというパターンがなんとなく了解できましたが、ついでに garlic も見ておきます。

[garlic] A plant that is related to the onion. The bulb of the plant is used for flavoring in cooking.

　子供たちに伝える文だけに、感動したくなるほど簡明な解説文です。野菜と果物は似たような表現で書かれますが、蔓物 grape はどうなっているでしょうか？

[grape] A small, juicy, round fruit that grows in bunches on vines. Grapes have a smooth, this skin that is usually green or purple in color. They are eaten raw or used to make raisins, jelly, jam, and wine.

　“are eaten 〜”のあと“used to make raisins 〜”という文型が紹介されています。連想式は野菜なら野菜ばかり、道具なら道具ばかり、昆虫なら昆虫ばかり調べます。この作業を毎日少しずつ１年間続ければ、少なくとも英語の低学年の教科書がなんとなく読めるようになります。英英辞典を使うとき、日本語で考えたり、文法に結びつけようとするのは野暮でしょう。
